HVAC-DOAS Field Research and Analysis

California

Activity: HVAC NR Research

Building Use: NR New/Exist

Year Completed: 2024

Goals: Efficient HVAC

Project Overview

Since 2017, staff from A2 Efficiency, working under the leadership of Neil Bulger, served as project researchers and analysts on a field research and analysis field study of advanced HVAC technology performance for nonresidential buildings for a large provider of electric and natural gas services in California. The project focused on dedicated outdoor air systems (DOAS) installed with separate heating and cooling systems, frequently variable refrigerant flow heat pumps (VRF) in California. The project focused on identifying example sites for ranges of system efficiency to best understand the potential for these technologies in the nonresidential building market.

Our Role

A2 Efficiency staff were involved from start to finish of the project, serving as technical leads on site recruitment, field monitoring, implementation planning and installation, data analysis, and detailed energy modeling and report writing.

Project Highlights

The research and analysis of data collected over 18 months of 15-minute data for building HVAC systems in 11 buildings.

The project produced nine reports consisting of:

  • 5 case studies

  • 2 targeted analysis reports of energy savings potential

  • 1 field assessment of multiple locations

  • And 1 final project report
