Grid Flexibility Whole-Building Opportunities

Building Load Modification Measures - 2019

For grid-interactive products, the question isn’t just how efficient it is, it’s how much demand you can move, and when.

The GridOptimal Buildings Initiative needed a rigorous, quantitative foundation for understanding how much grid flexibility building-side measures could actually deliver. We modeled nine load modification strategies across three U.S. climates and two building performance levels, individually and in packages, capturing both peak demand reduction and load shift potential.

The findings gave NBI and its utility coalition partners the evidence base to define grid-interactive building metrics, and gave manufacturers of demand-flexible products a credible, independent study showing the scale of opportunity their technologies are part of.
