DOD Fitness and Training Center

Fort Liberty, NC, Fort Moore, GA

Owner: Department of Defense (DOD)

Client: Coffman Engineers

Building Use: Wellness

Year Designed: 2024

Building Size: 32,000 sf

Goals: LEED, ASHRAE 90.1 +30%, All Electric

Project Overview

The US Department of Defense (DOD) sought to develop a building design for a new fitness and training center, referred to as the H2F Readiness facility, to be located throughout the US as needed. Coffman Engineers, in support of a design competition team with the fitness provider Beaver Fit, worked to develop designs which could be replicated to scale the multiple locations the DOD was considering.

The project included multiple energy efficiency goals for the design included:

  1. The UFC requirement to exceed ASHRAE 90.1 by 30%

  2. All Electric Systems

  3. LEED Silver Certification

Our Role

A2 Efficiency supported the design team with detailed building energy modeling and analysis of options to reach the multiple goals for the project. This included evaluating the design concepts in multiple locations to help identify solutions which could be applied in many locations. The team also provided thermal load calculations, leveraging the use of VE-IES to generate both mechanical sizing calculations and annual energy performance.

Project Highlights

Key performance achievements of the design:

  • 33% and 36% ASHRAE 90.1 2019 App G savings in the two locations

  • 14 LEED 4.1 EA credits identified for both locations

  • All Electric HVAC Design

Efficiency Measures incorporated: Efficient Cooling, Ventilation Energy Recovery, Variable Speed Fans, Low power lighting, Tight envelope, Improved wall and roof insulation
